RM Contractors Drive Innovation with Hitachi Connected Technology
RM Contractors are stepping up their game with a major investment in new Hitachi machinery and cutting-edge technology. The Worcestershire-based groundworks and civil engineering firm has added ten Hitachi ZX130LCN-7B's and four ZX210LC-7's to its fleet, while also adopting Leica GPS machine control on part of the new lineup.
It's a move that highlights the company's focus on innovation, efficiency, and safety. Founded in 1994 as a family business, RM Contractors has grown into one of the groundworks companies in the Midlands and Home Counties, working with the UK's top housebuilders on everything from roads and sewers to infrastructure projects.
The benefits are clear
Chris Watts, Road and Sewers Manager at RM Contractors, explained, "We're handling all the roads, sewers, pond areas and compounds for this Vistry Homes Development in Kidlington. The Leica system is a big step forward. It saves money by preventing operators from digging too deep, which cuts down on gravel use. It also reduces the need for engineers on site, saving manpower and making everything safer. Hitachi's 270-with around 100 Hitachi machines already in the fleet, reliability is a big factor.
Watts added, "The backup and reliability are what we like best. Drivers prefer Hitachi and the cab comfort stands out compared to the competition".
An operators view
Adam Watts, who has been operating machinery for a decade, said I've operated Kobelco and Komatsu before, but Hitachi is by far the smoothest. The levers and hydraulics dont jump out - it's a smooth operation. This is my first time using the Leica system, and it's impressive. You're within millimetres of the instructions, and it's quicker because you're not waiting for an engineer. The cab is spacious with plenty of room, which makes a big difference when you're in the cab for 9 hours a day".
Keith Watts, another operator on site, echoed the praise, "Hitachi are a class of their own. The ZX210LC-7 is a different class of machine. It's smooth, comfortable, has more space and more power. With the machine control, i did the whole pond using just the GPS. It was quicker than without, and pretty simple to get the hang of".
