Bauma 2025: Alternative drive concepts
Contributing to decarbonisation
The second item on the Bauma agenda is the alternative drive concepts for high-performance construction machinery. These are being tailored to the type of machine and infrastructure of the job site. Everything must be possible, from hydrogen to battery electrics, because the central question is always how the energy gets to the construction site and into the machine.
Construction machinery worldwide emits several hundred million tonnes of CO₂ every year, while more and more countries are committing to a carbon-free future. Considering this, the industry is increasingly switching from traditional diesel engines to more environmentally friendly drives.
Zero emissions
Hitachi Construction Machinery Co., Ltd (HCM) and KTEG (the joint venture between HCM and Kiesel Technology Entwicklung GmbH) are no exception, and we are meeting the challenge by offering an impressive range of zero-emission excavators. Nine models will be showcased at Bauma 2025 – making up one third of HCME’s innovative display.
The range of electric machines demonstrates our ongoing commitment to developing products for zero-emission job sites that also contribute to a low-carbon society. Three of the models – from 1.7 to 14 tonnes – have been manufactured by HCM, while the other six have been developed by KTEG.
Their development reflects our long-term belief that clean technologies are the way forward, especially as performance levels are similar to diesel alternatives.
The case for hydrogen
While electric-powered machines dominate the Bauma display, one of the excavators, the ZE300 H2, offers a different route by showcasing the potential of hydrogen as an alternative clean fuel. This 30-tonne concept excavator is truly groundbreaking and has been designed for heavy-duty work in environmentally sensitive areas.
The hydrogen engine is supplied by Deutz and hydrogen storage is integrated into the rear of the ZE300, replacing the counterweight. This allows for easy access to the engine compartment for maintenance and rapid refuelling.
