Young Norwegian contractor chooses Hitachi for his growing business
Delivered by Nasta AS, the machine is already hard at work on residential projects and its owner, 23-year-old Thomas Støa, couldn’t be happier with the upgrade.
A passion for Hitachi construction machinery
Thomas divides his week between full-time employment and running his own contracting business. “From Monday to Thursday, I work a four-day week at Marthinsen & Duvholt. I use a ZX250, so there’s a Hitachi there too,” he says. “I really enjoy it!”
But when others take a long weekend, Thomas keeps on working. “I usually work on Thursdays after work, then Friday and Saturday. I don’t get much free time, it’s mostly Sundays. But I like to work then too – if I get the chance,” he adds.
He has operated a variety of machines, but excavators are where he feels most at home.
Investing in a new machine
This autumn, Thomas decided it was time to invest in a new machine for his own company. Previously, he owned a five-tonne model, but this time he selected the six-tonne Hitachi ZX65USB-6 – the largest model in Hitachi’s mini excavator range and a popular choice among Norwegian contractors.
After test-operating the machine, the decision was easy. “I actually knew which machine I wanted, but I was very surprised that there was such a big difference from a five-tonner,” says Thomas.
“It’s a big jump. Everything is more durable; the boom and arm give much better reach, among other things! It’s a nice size, with much better capacity,” he adds. “So, for me it’s a big jump up!”
Building a business – and strong relationships
Thomas is based in Heddal, but his customer base spans a wide region. One factor in his steady stream of work is the strong partnerships he has built. On this site, a residential building in Notodden, he is working for Kåsastul Maskin AS. “I’ve been lucky and got several assignments through them. They transport the machine for me and bring in loads of gravel, so it works well!”
The homeowner has also noticed the performance of the orange excavator and the quick progress made by Thomas: “He’s really good, and not least fast!”
