Muffin Baking with Children @ Young Women’s Christian Association (Hitachi Construction Machinery Asia and Pacific)

ESG

On 20 September 2016, 15 volunteers from Hitachi Construction Machinery Asia and Pacific (HMAP) Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) committee members spent a meaningful afternoon at Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) center located at Outram Road. Volunteers were involved in the Blueberry Muffins Baking Session with children who have special needs such as dyslexia, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), mild autism spectrum disorder (ASD) etc.

The Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) of Singapore is a voluntary welfare organization that is committed to meeting the needs of society through active involvement in community services and its many programs and activities regardless of race, belief or religion, with love and compassion.

At YWCA, HMAP CSR volunteers participated in the afternoon baking session with the children guiding them how to prepare and measure the appropriate amount of ingredients, the mixing the ingredients as well as washing up all the utensils after the baking session. The children were divided into groups of 3 with 2 volunteers in each group. Much emphasis was placed on encouraging the children to work together as a team and take responsibility for one’s work.

Under the guidance of the facilitator at the center and with the nicely prepared recipe, the children had much success with the volunteers in baking the muffins. It was a very enjoyable and fun learning experience for everyone. The children were very well behaved, independent and very excited to bake their own muffins. They also took their own initiative and responsibility to wash and dry all the baking tools after use.

For this event, HMAP contributed a total of S$717 in sponsoring all the ingredients for the baking session, lego mini-figurines as presents together with motivational notes to the children as well as transportation for picking the children to and back from school.

It really makes our day to see the sense of achievement in the children for having completed their tasks successfully. We hope that through this session, the children learn the importance of teamwork and empathy for others.
