Hitachi Construction Machinery

Plant Observation Tour-Rediscovering Koka, the Monozukuri Town (Hitachi Construction Machinery Tierra)

On March 25, 2014, the Tourism Promotion Office and the Commerce and Industry Policies Division of Koka City, Shiga Prefecture sponsored a tour of Hitachi Construction Machinery Tierra’s Shiga Plant. Seven groups made up of 16 elementary school children and their parents and six staff members from Koka City participated in the tour.

The objective of this tour is to get the local citizens to once again recognize Koka City as the Shiga prefecture’s No. 1 “monozukuri” town and for them to take pride in this. The main theme of the tour was the environmental initiatives Hitachi Construction Machinery Tierra is tackling. The tour introduced the plant and the products. The tour led off with a presentation on the Hitachi Construction Machinery Group’s environmental vision and environmental activities, including Hitachi Construction Machinery Tierra’s promotion of the 3Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle). Participants were taught the names of excavator parts, such as boom, arm, and bucket, and the processes from assembly to shipment for compact excavators were explained. Afterwards, participants observed the actual production line.

The children were fascinated by the fact that the products Hitachi Construction Machinery Tierra manufactured in their local home town are shipped worldwide. The company was able to show the children the measures they were undertaking to leave nature and the environment untouched.

(The Yomiuri Shimbun and “ai Koka,” the Koka City PR magazine, reported on this tour.)
