Bosampor Village Presented with New Reservoir

On December 10, 2016, NPO Good Earth Japan (GEJ) held a ceremony to present the village of Bosampor, which is located in Battambang Province in the northwestern part of Cambodia, with a reservoir that it was built with the support of the GEJ.

The construction consisted of integrating two small reservoirs into one large reservoir to provide water for daily life and farming to 120 households in the village (approximately 450 people). Construction began in early November. Once completed, the reservoir was 59 meters long, 37 meters in width, and 4 meters deep.

A total of 160 people including Koji Sumioka, Representative Director of GEJ, and Executive Vice President of Hitachi Construction Machinery, and 90 adults and 60 children from Bosampor village participated in the ceremony to celebrate the completion of the reservoir. Representing the village, the deputy village chief made a powerful statement, promising that the villagers would maintain and manage the reservoir, as well as a road that was constructed in a separate project. After the ceremony, participants enjoyed num banh chok, commonly known as Khmer noodles, which are made from rice, and spent time making friends with the village people.

GEJ aims to improve the standard of living and independence of farmers living in areas of Cambodia that have been cleared of landmines. To this end, the GEJ’s activities focus on the development of an infrastructure, including the building of roads, and the creation of reservoirs necessary for daily life and irrigating farm lands. The Hitachi Construction Machinery Group aims to continue to support the GEJ’s activities.
